Empowering Nursing Through AI: The Crucial Role of Nurse Involvement in AI Development

Writer: Cheryl Field MSN, RNCheryl Field MSN, RN

In an era of rapid technological advancements, artificial intelligence (AI) this and AI that we should all be asking questions about the promise of AI to revolutionizing industries across the globe—including healthcare. The integration of AI into nursing holds immense potential to streamline workflows, enhance patient outcomes, and reduce the burden on nurses. However, the success of AI applications in nursing hinges on one critical factor: the involvement of nurses in the design, development, and deployment process.

Nurses are at the heart of patient care, we stand at the bedside more than any other clinical provider. Nurses possess unparalleled insights into the complexities of healthcare environments, the nuances of patient needs, and the practical challenges of daily clinical operations. Without the input of nurses  AI tools risk being misaligned with the realities of nursing practice, and actual patient harm could come of that!

The Value of Nurse Involvement

When nurses are engaged in the development of AI applications, these tools are more likely to address genuine pain points. For instance, AI algorithms designed to predict patient deterioration must consider the subtle clinical indicators that nurses observe firsthand. Similarly, workflow optimization tools should align with how nurses navigate time-sensitive tasks in fast-paced settings.

Nurse involvement also ensures that AI solutions are intuitive and user-friendly. The usability of AI tools can make or break their adoption in healthcare settings. Nurses can provide feedback on interface design, functionality, and integration into existing systems, lets be honest these tools MUST make our work more efficiency rather than create additional tasks.

There are real Challenges and Opportunities, and nurses are essential in the path forward. As AI continues to transform healthcare, nurses must not be passive recipients of technology but active participants in its evolution.

Go ahead, grab your headphones and listen in to this podcast where I talk about my role as a nurse in educating nurses on the essential of responsible AI and the questions you absolutely MUST be asking before your say Yes to the next vendor at your door.
