The Power Within: Elevating Nursing Through Self-Awareness and Technology

By Dr. Kimberly Delbo, DNP, RN

In nursing, mentorship is often viewed as a relationship between an experienced professional and a mentee, guiding them through clinical expertise, leadership, and career growth. However, there is another equally powerful form of mentorship—intrapersonal mentoring—where we become our own best mentors by cultivating self-awareness, resilience, and holistic well-being.

At Power Up Nursing, we are championing a new era of nursing excellence, one that integrates internal reflective practices with cutting-edge external technology. This fusion of science and soul empowers nurses, educators, and students to thrive both personally and professionally.

Harnessing the Power of Intrapersonal Mentoring

Intrapersonal mentoring is about developing a deeper relationship with ourselves—tuning into our thoughts, emotions, physiological responses, and overall well-being. When we engage in intentional self-reflection, we gain valuable insights that allow us to:

  •  Manage stress and burnout more effectively

  •  Enhance emotional intelligence and self-compassion

  •  Optimize energy levels and cognitive function

  •  Cultivate greater resilience in high-pressure environments

Integrating Technology for Greater Self-Awareness

One of the most powerful tools I have incorporated into my intrapersonal mentoring journey is the Ultrahuman Air Ring. This innovative wearable technology provides real-time biometric data on key health metrics, including:

  •  Sleep patterns – Understanding sleep cycles for better rest and recovery

  •  Stress levels – Tracking physiological responses to stress

  •  Heart rate variability (HRV) – A key indicator of resilience and nervous system balance

  •  Overall well-being – Monitoring daily patterns for a more holistic view of health

After months of using this ring, I have gained extensive data-driven insights into my stress responses, recovery trends, and energy fluctuations. These insights allow me to make more informed decisions about my daily habits, work-life balance, and overall self-care.

The Fusion of Mindfulness & Science

While technology provides valuable data, true transformation happens when we pair it with intentional reflection and self-inquiry. Through journaling, prayer and meditation, and self-awareness exercises, nurses and students can interpret their biometric data in meaningful ways, turning numbers into action.

This integrated approach can:

  •  Strengthen our ability to self-regulate under stress

  •  Enhance decision-making and leadership skills

  •  Help us recognize early signs of burnout and intervene proactively

By embracing both science and soul, we are not just improving our own well-being—we are reshaping the future of compassionate, sustainable nursing and healthcare. When we understand ourselves better, we can show up more fully, not only for our patients but for our colleagues, students, and communities.
